Louis LeonDiary of a Tar Heel Confederate Soldier
L**N
First-hand account of Confederate private
PVT Lewis Leon served in the Confederate States army from the start of the war at age 19 until the end, with his last year as a prisoner of war. He kept a daily memoir during that time, often just one or two sentences, which he published 50 years later. This is a recent reprint.PVT Leon was a recent immigrant from Germany who had moved from NYC to Charlotte a couple years before the war started. He was a store clerk with no prior military background. The book is fascinating in showing the perspectives of an intelligent, educated, but low level young Infantry soldier as it happened. It is not great literature, but most interesting today, given the many assertions about Confederate soldiers in current circulation.

Four Stars
Great look into the life of the Confederate solider.

Not much here.
The book arrived quickly and in great condition, but Mr. Leon's diary is not on par with so many other Civil War veterans diaries. It is short and could have given so much more info., especially his time as a P.O.W. in a Union prison towards the end of the war and As a Jewish Confederate soldier.
