The mat has a raised edge design to prevent the any liquid or flour from spilling out and this is 1/4-inch thick around the outside edge of the mat. The mat is approximately 1/8-inch in thickness past the edge which is what creates the raised edge. I would recommend the mat as it is easy to clean and keeps any "messes" contained within the mat.
