Squeaky Toys: A Collector's Handbook and Price Guide (A Schiffer Book for Collectors)

a HUGE DISPOINTMENT!
I was extremely disappointed with this book...especially since it was published by Schiffer..who has a long time reputation in the collectibles/ antiques world as high caliber. This " photo album" is a fairly small, disorganized collection with little info useful to collectors. There is no order...subjects are not grouped together --a collector might find it useful to look up dogs on one spread, babies on another, and teddy bears elsewhere. No such organization as to manufacturer, toy designer, dates, or subjects. One vinyl faced plush (not a squeak toy ) and a strange fabric doll, are bewildering in a book about vinyl and rubber squeak toys too. Some double page spreads have a mere three photos floating in space, with little to no information. There is no info , biographical, or other about the well known designers of their time- such as Ruth E. Newton, or Edward Mobley. No info about the more common versus the rare, nor of all the various color variations of the most popular Sun Rubber characters were made in...such as the boys, and girls, dogs, cats, etc. One image, and one high price range stated, regardless of rare or common version. On top of this, the prices ranges throughout the book do not show much diversity. The author does little to show expertise, or knowledge of values. There is no info on washing, restoring, or removing ink stains. Is there is any recourse to mending damages like cracks? How about bringing back a glossy sheen? The cover is the best photo in the book, and depicts a toy or 2 not found anywhere inside the covers. The prices are insanely high for even the most common easily found squeaky toys. Just monitor eBay for a month on a daily basis...and the prices from all over the country define the market...way less. I have collected these toys over many decades in many different places including NYC, and the Midwest, in all sorts of diverse market places - antique shops, fairs, thrift stores, and auctions. There are countless hundreds if not thousands more readily known and available to collect vintage squeaky toys that could have also been easily included in this book in order to be a Schiffer quality guide.

Great photo resource!
I consider this book more a photo history of squeaky toys rather than a price guide or historical reference guide. The author has a great collection of large color photos with manufacturer information listed where available. The weakness I found (and the author acknowledges it in the intro) is that there is little history on the companies that made these toys. As someone new to the field, I would like to know more about the Edward Mobley Co. and Arrow Rubber & Plastics who made one of my favorite childhood toys! A plus, I have found the prices listed to be on the high side based on recent purchases off EBay or in local antique shops. If you are new to collecting toys of this type (like me) and interested in seeing the types of squeaky toys available, you'll find this book helpful.
