Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course 2nd Edition

This has become the backbone of the comprehensive musical theatre instruction in the MT training courses I teach (high school, performing arts magnet). There has never been another text like this to my knowledge that can be used to guide a course of study in musical theatre---and one that can be used with an instructor in a classroom setting or on one's own for personal study. The examples are current and fresh and today's students will easily recognize the figures excerpts. The exercises are invaluable and balance the practical application of skills taught with a sense of humor and fun (and again---included are exercises that can be done in groups/with a partner, or alone, if you are simply looking to pick this book up for yourself). Combined with a course of study in applied singing, acting, and dancing, this text will thoroughly prepare the actor seeking a future in musical theatre.

Our daughter is a rising Senior at one of the top performing arts high schools in the country. She had the pleasure of taking a couple of Musical Theater classes with Mr. Joe Deer last summer at an intensive. When she came across his book, she ordered it right away. All I can say is that it lit a giant fire in her! She has very little free time, but when she does, she is reading this book. As comprehensive as it gets. Fantastic exercises and incredible insights for actors in musical theater. This is a MUST HAVE book for any MT student. It will put you way ahead.

Acting in Musical Theater is comprehensive and filled with excellent information. However, it has one very annoying feature. Throughout the book there are references to a companion website filled with excercises and resources. As best as I can tell, the website does not exist. The only site available through Rutledge is one for a dfferent book on directing musical theater. This flaw could be forgiven if the book were an old or out of print edition. But I bought the second edition published in 2016.
