Fantastic illustrations and thought provoking mystery!
Fantastic illustrations, open-ended story that invites the reader to speculate and theorize and come up with their own adventures! My 7 year old and I read this book together at bed time. I did most of the reading since many of the words were a little advanced for her. The book starts off by introducing the mystery of the disappearance of a robotics genius in Scotland. Then, every page or so includes descriptions and drawings of each of her robots. The drawings were beautifully done. The descriptions were silly in the best way and really engaged my kiddo. I used the book to ask open-ended questions like “what do YOU think happened to Lady Bonquers?” And “what kind of robot would you create?” The answers lead us into great discussions about space, the ocean, robotics, engineering, and science. Great book! Much thanks to the author and to whoever at Amazon chose this book for their monthly book subscription. What a wonderful find!

This is a wonderful read-along for the young scientist in the family
This is a wonderful read-along for the young scientist in the family. My 8 year old grandson needed help with the text but not with the detailed drawings of robots or the book's realistic appearance as a recovered journal. It's imaginative enough that a child can really believe in Lady Regina and her clever robotic creations.

Great drawings, detailed text... ROBOTS!
Taking your child to the library can be an interesting adventure. My 6-year-old is a curious and precocious guy, but will often wander into the pre-K section and pick out board books and those interesting-texture books people buy for babies to touch; he'll also pick out "sophisticated" comics, anime and other books that are much too old for him. Obviously, it's up to the parent, ultimately, to decide what is appropriate for their child's developmental level. I see lots of parents erring on the side of showing their young kids "mature" tv, movies and books. In a way, then, I feel like I'm kind of lucky that in the end my kid almost always seems to respond the best to things that are "age-appropriate". Generally speaking he gets scared of and/or confused by stuff that's too mature for him, and gets bored quickly by baby stuff. So, I'm the kind of person that's always looking for the "Ages x-and-up" sign on any kid's product. If you read Amazon's product description of this (8-and-up) book, and scan around looking at the images provided, you get a pretty good idea what you're in for.If your child is old enough to read and understand words like:preliminary, mechanics, hazardous, nimble, disheveled, emphatically, knowledge, conservatively, exterminatorand is into robots, and has a good imagination and sense of humor...... this would make a fantastic gift for them.If you have a child old enough to read, but not familiar with words like the above, get ready for a lot of "what's that word? what does that mean?" interruptions.I would imagine if you have a child younger than even that, showing them the varied and interesting drawings and paintings and giving a rudimentary outline of what the robot does might engage them for a while. So far my child thinks this book is super-cool. Especially the space robot. I'll check back in in a month or so to add whether he's abandoned it....

Great for kids and artists
I'm a grown up but I enjoyed the book so much! It is a source of inspiration and it boosts your creativity, especially when you have to come up with stories and drawings for kids! I wish more books like this are written.

My kids who are avid readers and love robots and science couldn't get into it
My kids love imaginative stories about fantastic creatures, and they love science and history books. One of my children is obsessed with robots. So I thought this book would be perfect for them.Indeed, reading it as an adult, I thought it was quite clever and was inclined to rate it highly. The book is the creative story of a make-believe robot maker named Lady Regina Bonquers III. Each section has about two pages with sketches of another one of her imaginative and silly robot creations. There is the SLOBOT, a snake-like robot that cleans the drains, an underwater exploration frog robot, a walking nose smelling robot, and even interplanetary battle bots. The book is full of thick glossy pages with colorful drawings and sketches. It is designed to look like a journal of all of Lady Bonquers's creations. Interspersed with each robots are comments on what period in history they were developed and how they contributed to that time.Yet my kids had no interest in the book. There are plenty of 4 and 5 star reviews already, so apparently other people saw it like I did initially. The production value of the book is very high, and the author is obviously quite imaginative. In fact, the book with simpler text could have been a nice silly picture book for the younger set. But with pages of text describing the robots in intricate detail (with historical points about what happened at the time), it is obviously aimed at older children. It was so matter of fact that it confused my kids. For instance, it mentions the humans landing on the moon in 1969, and mentions that the Bonquers BE-SM-IA satellite video explorer robot was one of the first space missions on the next page. The book was too lengthy and wordy to be a silly book, and really not silly enough to be that funny. Adding in the confusing bits of real history interspersed, my kids just didn't enjoy it.I rate it three stars - it could be a matter of taste, but this family of Harry Potter fans, science buffs, and robot lovers just couldn't find much interesting in the book, and it was put on the shelf after a single read.
