Best Sanding Solution - Almost Perfect.
I completely love the functionality of this sanding pad. It doesn't flip over and it seems to cover a much better area, so fewer passes. I bought the round version at the same time, but never opened it. The foam pad allows good even coverage, so you don't get the "tracks" that you can get from a standard sanding head where the paper or screen is rolled over a hard block.Only thing that I didn't like was that the velcro in the corners started letting go and after one use (a whole house of ceilings and a couple of bathrooms) I felt that I had to order a replacement pad. It seems like a design compromise, but not a flaw - to get the nice functionality and performance, you need the foam pad and every time that you have to replace a sheet of sandpaper, you tug on the corners a bit to remove the old sheet - when you tug on the corners, you are also tugging the foam pad (held on with velcro also) away from the metal plate. Thankfully, the foam pad is replaceable and held on with velcro. If you are careful and use a drywall knife to slide under the old sheet of sandpaper, you can start the removal of the sandpaper with a little less stress on the corners and they might hold up better. Once the velcro on the foam pad at the corners gets pulled away, it doesn't seem to want to stick to the metal plate as well (probably because of all of the drywall dust it is exposed to). I'm sure that if you really fussy or stick to smooth or heavier textures that you won't notice or need to replace the foam pad for a long time. I would say that it might be a problem for a really light orange peel texture and you might want to use a fresh foam pad because having the corners lifting off of the metal plate might take off that light texture more aggressively than the other 90% of the pad.All in all, I still think that it is the best solution for any kind of drywall sanding. Maybe a slightly more durable or aggressive velcro on the back of the foam pad would keep it from letting go so easily, then everyone would rate it 5 stars. Would the better velcro on the foam pad make it more expensive, sure, but we are already paying a premium to start using this system of sanders. Another .$.50 or $1 wouldn't break the bank.
