Excellent resource for help understanding a great poet
This is a no-nonsense, just-the-important-stuff, wonderful little volume for folks who wish they could understand more of one of the world's great poets. Mr. Turnbull offers an excellent selection of Burns' poetry, very nicely unified around the theme of nature. This is one of those books that begs to be read while listening to the Audible version. One small improvement that I would love to see in another edition would be parallel texts. Poetry has to be read and re-read to be well understood, and parallel texts would make it easier, I think, to grasp more meaning as the poems are re-read. Nevertheless, that is a small concern. I will certainly be reading Burns again and again from this little gem of a book.

Made Me A Poetry Lover
Like most young men, forced to read poetry in high school, I never gave it a second thought. But the years have tempered my heart and these poem did touch it.

Needful for Outlander fans
Read it for Outlander references. The author has a YouTube channel where he reads these in both Scots and more contemporary English. Very fun

Both original Scots and a translation that can be read out loud as well
Having the original dialect for effect with a lovely translation for those not so familiar makes for an enjoyable addition to a celebration or just relaxing and enjoying the artist. I recommend the whole series.

I thought it was a good read.
First time reading from the author.I generally don’t read history of people type books. But Robert Burns poems and songs, just had to read it. It was nice seeing the modern translation after the original ones. To read how he grew up and toured around from place to place. I loved to see or read on how they came up with them. It was nice to see Abraham Lincoln was one of the many he inspired. I love poems so I had to read it and it was a nice changed. (The original writing) The Birks of Aberfeldy song he wrote sounded familiar.“Bonie lassie, will ye go, Will ye go, will ye go, Bonie lassie, will ye go To the birks of Aberfeldy”Wonder if it was on a black and white movie I watched or something else. Or I could be wrong and it sounds familiar to another I am thinking of. But still it was nice reading about Robert Burns life, poems, and songs back in 1759 to 1794.Got for an honest review.Thank you for sharing your book with me.

Very nice and a pleasure to read through on a cold evening in the countryside…
I just love the Burns collections of poems and songs by Alastair Turnbull. AT is clearly passionate and very knowledgeable about his subjects. Every poem is presented in its context with a short, interesting story, and then printed in the original scots idiom (hard to understand…) AND a standard english version. I just love that!Alastair has a very informal style of writing, which goes straight to my heart.Thank you so much for these collected poems and songs! I love them!
