Montes Alpha Colchagua Malbec is deep ruby red in colour. Black and red fruits on the nose with hints of chocolate and pepper. The Apalta vineyard brings ripe blackfruits with round tannins, while the Marchigue vineyard brings elegant notes of violets and red fruits.The grapes come from Montes‘ own vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe, arguably two of the finest sites in the Colchagua Valley. In Apalta, vines are ed on 45 degree slopes, providing good exposure to achieve ripeness. Cool ocean breezes and low night-time temperatures help to moderate this warm area, allowing for slow fruit development and retention of varietal aromas and . Marchigüe is slightly cooler because of its closer proximity to the ocean. Conditions are dry, with the region lying in the rain shadow of the Coastal Range, reducing the threat of fungal disease and resulting in consistently y harvests. All grapes were hand harvested.The 2011 vintage in the Colchagua Valley was marked by a notably cool growing season and belated spring. The result of this was a late harvest, with picking commencing 2 weeks later than average. Though ripening was a challenge, these cooler temperatures produced highly aromatic wines with excellent and concentration. Yields were low, but the overall quality of fruit was outstanding, giving wines that are balanced and elegant.The grapes were cold soaked for five days to extract aromas, before fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 12 days. The juice then spent time on its skins to develop structure and colour. After malolactic fermentation, 60% of the final blend was aged in French oak barrels (1/3rd new) for 12 months to add complexity and roundness.
