A Necessity If You Use the Bit Driver Frequently.
The need to own this piece closely correlates with how often you use the large bit driver on your Leatherman. Also, if you purchased the separate bit kit and you use any of those pieces frequently, then you probably want this. I use this for the Wave, but it is compatible with any Leatherman that has the large bit driver (there's only two sizes and the small bit driver takes pieces the diameter of a paper clip so they're not easy to confuse). Why do you need this? If you use the bit driver with any frequency you understand that sometimes it has a hard time getting into tight areas because of how close it is to the Leatherman tools main body. This not only extends the reach by several inches it also allows you to plug any 1/4 inch socketed pieces into the end (as well as Leatherman's smaller footprint bits). So basically it adds a whole lot of functionality to the Leatherman bit driver. This extension also fits in the Wave nylon and nylon leather sheath. If you don't use the Leatherman bit driver often or you have a dedicated 1/4 driver set you prefer, then maybe save the money. A nice dedicated 1/4 bit driver is probably more ergonomic than using the Leatherman as a handle, and probably a little steadier too. This product is made for those people who want high functionality in a small package vs. those who need the absolute best specific tool for any job. It's be nice if there was a locking mechanism to keep this on the tool a little more snugly, but that's more a design issue with the individual tool than this piece which is very well made.

Good design, but no where to carry it.
Every Leatherman product I have used or owned has been really excellent and sturdy. This one is no exception, it does exactly what it's designed to do...which is, attach to a Wave or similar multitool with the flattened, reversible bit, and accept the standard 1/4" bit of your choice on the working end. Overall length is ~3.25" and the knurled shaft is nice for quick rotation without the multitool. The bit end is not magnetic, but has an interference spring, which holds the bit securely. Here's my only complaint. I have several Leatherman tools from different generations, and they each have a different belt case design. None of the cases will accommodate this tool. No room in the leather case, old nylon/velcro case could hold it, but this extension adapter would be in the way and could be lost, and the newer nylon/velcro case, the one with all the elastic, should be able to hold this, but all the pockets are bottomless. Bottom line, if you're taking this mobile, and what else would you do with it, you're going to have to be creative about where you carry it. Hopefully there's room where you keep your bits, I guess. I wanted to deduct stars over this, but it's really no fault of this product.Nice accessory, a bit pricey, but as it's the only way to accomplish this purpose, it's still a good value. And ALL Leatherman products are excellent, and are backed up by one of the best warranties in this, or any other, business.

Very Well-Made and Handy Add-On
I’m around sailboats mostly. In that environment, I need to cut something, or pull something, or jab a hole in something, etc., a half-dozen times every day. If I’m on deck, and I have to climb down into the cabin, for tools, that’s a bother. So, I keep my Leathman multitool on my belt all the time. Then, in my cargo shorts, I also have this solid extender…,with the flat blade bit kept on it. Lastly, I also keep a Phillips bit loose in another pocket. This works great for me!

Very Useful
This is an expensive add-on for your Leatherman, so I had to take off a star for that. The adapter does a great job of increasing the functionality of your multitool, however. It allows one to use standard hex bits and the length of it helps for reaching screws, which is sometimes needed. Whatever metal Leatherman used in the manufacture of this is sturdy in my limited experience.

or wandering the great outdoors with my packed strapped to my back
I use it regularly with my leatherman. It's kept together in my pack in the car, so if I'm riding around town in my vehicle, on my bike, or wandering the great outdoors with my packed strapped to my back, it's one tool that always available in a pinch.Over the years it's saved me a world of pain and hassle and has so far defied rust, breakdown, and even real noticeable wear. It's one of those great products that, if I were to lose it, I'd IMMEDIATELY replace. I don't know if a product can have much higher praise than that.As an aside, and the next full paragraph or two has nothing to do with the driver and is there completely skippable without losing anything of value regarding the actual product, I know Amazon uses a 5-star rating scale, but I'm not a big fan of the system for one very important reason: if you take off just a single star, the item you’re reviewing essentially loses a full 20% of its possible value. In a lot of cases -especially for shoddy, badly designed trash that looked good in the pics and in the package, and comes with a brilliantly-sounding pitch from the manufacturer, every last star you subtract from the piece of garbage that’s recently entered your life and needs to exit it just as fast as it arrived, every last star you slash will be the only pleasure you’ll ever profit from this mechanical abomination you’ll be soon returning for a refund - using a 5-star system is no obstacle to getting an accurate reading on a product. The only real problem is that, sadly, you’re forbidden from giving zero stars, even when that exactly what the product merits. But sometimes nipping a full star for a small grievance of an otherwise exceptionally-crafted product is simply taking it a bit too far, if you follow me. The penalty is just a little disproportionate to the crime committed by the product in question, and what probably happens a lot of the time - and this is totally understandable - is the reviewer gives the item the benefit of the doubt, causing it to notch a higher overall score than the item may actually deserve. And the other side of the coin is just as potentially damaging, and painful in the wallets of the product’s manufacturer. The sticklers out there who find something only slightly wrong with the item and consequently can't give it a 5-star review ends up costing the makers a full 20% when the infraction didn’t really net anywhere near the hit. That's a longwinded way of saying that if I were to rate the bit driver extension using a beefier, more comprehensive 10-star review system, the driver would STILL warrant all ten stars, which is why I can't emphasize this strongly enough, if you're one of the innumerable fans of Leatherman products, and you probably wouldn't be reading this right now if you weren't, the bit driver extension is one of their must-haves.It numbers as one of those truly well-designed products that I’ve had the pleasure of purchasing over the years that’s an all-in-one, out-of-the-box, and out-of-the-park home runs in every sense of the word. The bit driver is an over-engineered device that, while small, can knock out tough jobs that will surprise you by the ease of use. While mine has mostly been put to service on keep my bike on the road and functioning on those long Pacific Coast rides I’ve had the pleasure of taking over the years, but it’s also been called into service to help people get their cars going on two occasions. At home, I have any number of better, faster, more effortless tools at my disposal, but it earns its keep as an instrument of many crucial uses in the great outdoors. And it’s built tough enough that your children - or possibly even grandchildren - might well be using the driver long after you’ve reached that venerable stage of a man or woman’s life when it's time to start making those tough, but well-deserved hand-offs of the really good stuff that you’ve accumulated over the years. Pass down this bit driver - and a Leatherman to accompany it - to the next generation of builders, tinkerers, dreamers, and explorers way down there in the fresh, green, healthy new shoots of your family tree, and if it’s anything like mine, it will serve them well until the time comes for them to give it to their kids.
